Spianada is the largest square in Corfu and in the whole Balkans, an impressive and historic square. In 1576 the inhabitants began to demolish buildings located around the Fortress to increase their visibility and defense. It is estimated that about 2,500 homes were demolished in 2.5 years. The area was later planted with trees by the French, creating the now historic Spianada in the center of Corfu town. The walk to the Spianada is enjoyable and necessary, as the view to the sea is wonderful. Walking in the square one can see the Ionian Ring Stern built in honor of Sir Thomas Maitland, English Commissioner, while you can also buy prickly pears from the various wanderers in the square. In the square you will usually hear a group or the city philharmonic playing classical music or jazz. On Holy Saturday at 11 in the morning, the custom of Botides is revived in the city of Corfu. The inhabitants throw the famous clay jugs from the balconies of their houses, exorcising the evil spirits
